How to Look Younger: Healthy and Beauty Secrets

Today on the Dr. Oz Show, we see age defying nutrition secrets so you can look 10 years younger, and tips to help you burn fat for good.

Skin Care

Brown Spots

Dr. Kaufman, a dermatologist,  brings her “secret weapon” to fight against brown spots: Pycogenol. Take 50 mg per day two times a day. It is full of antioxidants, and can provide sun protection. If you apply it topically, it can help the brown spots fade.

Crow’s Feet

She recommends the Palovia (the only FDA approved home laser treatment) for crow’s feet. Use it every day for a month, one time a day. After this, you use it twice a week for a month. The average retail cost is $450 for this machine. If you do not want to spend this kind of money on skin care, she recommends using a cream that is more like a peel, safe for use around the eyes, called “Truth is in the Eyes” by Olehenriksen.

Dr. Rovina Brock, who is 56 years old, but is believed by guests to be no more than 34, is a nutrition coach, who shows us how the food we eat can age us.

The Fountain of Youth Shake

  • 1 cup coconut water
  • 2-3 wheatgrass ice cubes
  • 2 handfuls of spinach
  • 3 pineapple spears
  • 1/2 lemon peeled
  • 1 small green apple
  • 1 tbsp ginger
Put all the ingredients together in a blender and drink every morning. This drink is full of antioxidants to help combat against toxic build up, and keep our skin healthy.

A form of B vitamins, which makes your hair healthy. Take 5 mg per day. If you want to eat it rather than take a supplement, almond butter is a good source.

What You Wear Ages You

Style expert Katrina Szish visits to show us how you can dress yourself to look and feel younger.

Put Your Clothes on a Diet

  • Don’t wear baggy clothes. Get something that fits. Use jackets and skirts. Wear jackets that hit your waist to show off more of your figure. Don’t wear mini-skirts, but look for one that hits no more than 2 inches above your knee, or rests at your knee.
  • Banish the black. Look for bright colors and patterns.
  • Statement accessories!

This allows you to put self tanner and/or sunscreen on your back and other hard-to-reach areas to ensure you get a healthy glow without risking sun damage to your skin.

Kim Lyons’ 10 Day Diet Plan

Kim Lyons’ is most well known for her work on the TV show The Biggest Loser. She’s here today to share a 10 day plan that will help you burn fat and change your body, with a quickness.

Step One: Fat Flush

This fat flush drink is designed to help cleanse your body. It contains grapefruit juice to help your body burn fat and tangerine to help stabilize your blood sugar levels and increase insulin sensitivity. Cucumber helps your body combat against water retention and bloating. Peppermint also helps to make it taste great and improve digestion.

Fat Flush Water
Ingredients, per 8-ounce serving

  • Water
  • 1 slice grapefruit
  • 1 tangerine
  • ½ cucumber, sliced
  • 2 peppermint leaves
  • Ice

Combine ingredients in a large pitcher. Make a pitcher each morning, because the longer the drink sits, the better it tastes. Drink at least an 8 ounce glass before each meal, for three glasses per day, for 10 days straight. You can drink more if you want.

Step Two: Opt for Green Carbs Over Brown

For weight loss, most of your carbs need to come from green vegetables, rather than brown sources such as a whole wheat pasta and rice. Here are some ideas you can try:

  • Leaves of lettuce in place of bread for sandwiches
  • Zucchini strips in place of pasta
  • Freekeh: This is a low carb grain that is high in fiber. Opt for it instead of rice as a side when you eat dinner

Step Three: Spice Up the Protein

Make a spice rub using these things, and you’ll get an extra weight loss boost:

  • Chili powder: contains capsaicin, the chemical in peppers that makes them hot. This helps the body burn fat.
  • Tumeric: contains curcumin which is thought to slow the growth of fat cells in the body.
  • Mustard Seed: is thought to boost the metabolism so you will burn more calories.

Use equal parts (2 tbsp) of each spice as a rub for all your chicken, fish, pork, etc. for 10 days.

Step Four: Snack Skinny

Instead of buttery, salty popcorn, Kim suggests making Cauliflower Popcorn:

  • 2 heads of cauliflower
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp hemp seeds
  • Pepper to taste

Cut up cauliflower into popcorn-size florets. Mix with some pepper, olive oil and hemp seeds. Bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes at 420 °F.

Kim’s Workout Plan: 15 Minutes to Fitness Without Leaving the House

This plan does strength, training, and flexibility.

  • Start when you wake up with the bedroom balance stretch. Place your hands on the side of the bed in the plank position. Scoop down and up, go all the way up and rotate body open. This starts your day off positive. Doing ten reps, 5 on each side.
  • Move to the kitchen and do the microwave march. Set the timer for 10 minutes. Hands behind your head, and pump your legs up alternating knees with your arms at one rep per second. Then move to a cross country ski move for a little while. Then, move and squat, and punch up. What matters is you have fun with it and keep moving for 10 minutes. Mix it up and do it how you want to.
  • For the remaining four minutes, move to the living room, and put your knee on the couch, and do an inclined push up, pushing your leg out and up. This should tighten your core, and work your butt at the same time.

Fat Fighting Mexican Fiesta

Chef LaLa turns a taquitos dish into a lower fat, healthy version. She offers a healthier version of guacamole, and a margarita. Taquitos are essentially baby taco roll ups, that are fried. It comes down to using healthy cooking methods with traditional Mexican ingredients.

Cheesy Chicken Taquitos

  • 4 cups water
  • 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breast halves
  • Salt to taste
  • 6 oz shredded, Monterey Jack
  • 1 tsp fresh oregano
  • 1 tsp chives chopped
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 16 soft corn tortillas
  • Canola oil cooking spray
  • 2 cups jicama guacamole (recipe below)

Add water to large saucepan and bring to boil over high heat. Add chicken and salt. Bring just to boil; reduce heat. Cover and simmer 15 minutes or until chicken is no longer pink in center. Remove chicken from pan, discard cooking water; shred chicken into thin strips. In medium bowl combine chicken, cheese, herbs, salt and pepper.

Heat tortillas on griddle until pliable. Place thin strip of filling lengthwise on tortillas and roll tightly in flute shape. Secure with wooden toothpicks. Mist taquito with cooking oil. Repeat with remaining ingredients.

Bake filled taquitos in cooking pan 8-10 minutes or until golden and crisp.

Jicama Guacamole

  • 2 cups jicama, finely diced
  • 1 cup chopped tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1/2 cup finely diced red onion
  • 3 Serrano chiles, finely diced
  • 1 large avocado, finely diced
  • Juice of 1/2 lime
  • 1 tsp salt

Combine all ingredients in medium bowl. Stir to combine.

 Spicy Mango Margarita

  • 4 oz silver tequila
  • 2 oz orange liquor
  • 2 oz freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 6 oz mango juice, unsweetened
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • Ice cubes

Place tequila, orange liquor, lime juice, mango juice and chili powder in a cocktail shaker with ice. Cover and shake until mixed and chilled. Place the combined chili powder and salt on a plate. Run a piece of lime on the rim of the glass. Press the rim of a margarita glass into the mixture to rim the edge. Pour margarita into a hurricane-style glass.

Garnish rim with lime wedges and chili powder and a little salt.
